Massachusetts requires three basic types of insurance as compulsory insurance, meaning you can’t purchase a new car without it. This will cover bodily injury of $20,000 per person injured in one accident and $40,000 for all injured in any one accident; property damage coverage of up to $5,000 for injury to or destruction of property of other in any one accident; and personal injury protection that covers up to $8,000 in medical and work loss expenses regardless of fault.

You are not required to purchase more than the minimum coverage in Massachusetts, however, if you don’t you are personally liable for any expenses beyond the maximum amounts purchased. This means that if you are in an accident and you are found liable for $100,000 of damages, and you have the minimum insurance, the absolute coverage you can expect is $40,000 and the rest, $60,000 comes out of your pocket.
